Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal hit-and-run pileup on Interstate 35 in San Antonio.
The accident happened at 3 a.m. The driver of a gold sedan was heading south on Interstate 35 when he struck a cable in the median, disabling his car. The car remained disabled in the main lanes on I-35 near Kinney Road, causing two other vehicles to crash. A black car and an 18-wheeler headed south both collided with the disabled gold car.
The 28-year-old driver of the black car died at the scene of the crash. He has been identified as Kehinde Lateef. When medics arrived at the scene of the crash, the driver of the gold vehicle ran away.
Sgt. Mario Cervantes from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said that the driver hid in a Southwest Bexar County plant nursery for four hours.
The search for the driver used the help of helicopters from the San Antonio Police Department. Hospitals as far away as Atascosa County were asked to notify authorities if a patient arrived with injuries from a car crash.
A security guard at Color Spot Nursery along the highway found the driver walking around on the lot at 7 a.m. When the guard asked the driver to leave, he returned to his car, which was still on the highway being investigated. Authorities detained him at the scene of the crash. He was not immediately charged with a crime.
The driver of the 18-wheeler that was also involved in the crash was not hurt.
We send our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Lateef after this sudden loss.
