Chantix (Varenicline Tartrate ) is a smoking cessation medication and was launched by Pfizer, after seeking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2006. The drug essentially blocks nicotine receptors in the human body and helps in the reduction of cravings for cigarettes and decrease in the pleasurable effects from cigarettes. Chantix is widely used in nicotine replacement therapy, and it is estimated that over 3 million Americans use this medication, to end their smoking habit.
Chantix Side Effects
The drug is typically accompanied by side effects such as nausea, headache, and difficulty sleeping and abnormal dreams. However, in recent times, Chantix is being increasingly associated with psychiatric complaints in its users. Reports are emerging on a series of side effects that are manifest in Chantix users, including:
- Erratic Behavior
- Agitation
- Hostility
- Suicidal behaviour
- Depression
Recently, it has also been reported that drug could potentially worsen pre-existing psychiatric conditions or cause the recurrence of past psychiatric issues in patients.
Responding to these reports, Pfizer maintained that such episodes of irrational behavior can be caused by nicotine withdrawal. However, in November 2007, the FDA ordered an investigation into the drug following reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 instances of suicidal behaviors that may be linked to Chantix. It observed that while Chantix does not contain nicotine, and the symptoms may well be attributable to nicotine withdrawal, the psychiatric issues surfaced not only in patients who had stopped smoking, but also in patients who continued to smoke, while on Chantix therapy. This suggested that there could potentially be a well established link between the use of Chantix and serious psychiatric complications.
Following the observations, Pfizer listed information on suicidal thoughts and other psychiatric problems in the labeling of Chantix, in 2008. However, several consumer advocacy groups including groups such as the Public Citizen demanded that the FDA order Pfizer to indicate the suicide risk with a Black Box Warning.
The FDA on its part reviewed further reports on Chantix, along with data gathered from clinical trials and scientific literature. It surveyed reports on unusual changes in behavior and worsening depression along with 98 cases of suicide and 188 cases of attempted suicide among Chantix users. The FDA observed that many of these problems emerged shortly after the patients began using the drug, and that the symptoms reduced once they discontinued the medication. In some cases however, the symptoms developed even though medication was stopped. Based on these reports, the FDA concluded the possibility of a clear link between Chantix and psychiatric complications.
In July 2009, the FDA mandated a Black Box Warning in the labeling of Chantix, which highlights the risk of developing serious mental health conditions such as behavioral changes, depressed mood, hostility and suicidal thoughts when taking this medication.
Additionally, the FDA urged Pfizer to not just stop with the Black Box warning, but also include more information in the Warnings section and Medication Guide, which further elaborate the risk of mental health events when using Chantix. It also reiterated the need for clear communication between patients and healthcare professionals since Chantix may not just create new psychiatric conditions, but also capable of worsening existing conditions and rekindling past conditions.
