Johnson & Johnson™ announced the voluntary recall of the DePuy© ASR™ Hip Implant system in August 2010 after a study from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales showed that 1 out of every 8 patients who received one of the recalled hip implant had to undergo at least one revision surgery within five years following the initial operation. The recall involves the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement capping the ball of the femur. Only the first of these 2 products, the ASR XL Acetabular System, was approved for use in the United States.
At least 93,000 people have received one of the recalled Johnson & Johnson DePuy ASR hip implants and are therefore directly affected by this recall.
Patients who have already suffered from a defective prosthesis from DePuy reported various symptoms such as pain, swelling inflammation and although it is not unusual for patients to experience pain and swelling after a recent hip replacement, it appeared that these symptoms can continue months after the operation, sometimes being aggravated by infection and damage to the bone and tissue in the hip area.
