What is Gadolinium® and Gadodiamide?
Gadolinium® is a FDA approved contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It provides greater contrast between normal tissue and abnormal tissue in the brain and body.
After it is injected into a vein, Gadolinium® accumulates in the abnormal tissue that may be affecting the body or head. Gadolinium® causes these abnormal areas to become very bright (enhanced) and easy to see on the MRI. So what is the problem?
Gadolinium side effects
Studies have found a causal link between use of Gadolinium® and a debilitating disease called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), also called Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD) that occurs in patients with kidney failure.
Symptoms may be redness of the skin, swelling and tightening of the skin, usually limited to the extremities but sometimes extending to the trunk areas. Seriously affected patients may be unable to walk, or fully extend the joints of their arms, hands, legs, and feet. Deep bone pain occurs in the hip and rib areas in some patients. Lesions of the hands and feet occur in some late stages.
There is no known cure for NFD or NSF. Patients with this disease can be easily identified if the cause is from Gadolinium® because the DNA of the drug will be present in the patient's system.
