What is Tequin® and Gatifloxacin?
Tequin® is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, sinuses, skin, urinary tract as well as certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Since its launch in 2000, cases of patients using Tequin® and developing serious blood sugar problems arose and increased. Actually 388 patients showed blood sugar complications due to the use of Tequin® or Gatifloxacin since 2000.
Tequin® side effects
Early 2006, the FDA and Bristol Myers, the manufacturer of Tequin®, changed the label of the drugs and warned against its use by diabetic people.
In March 2006, a study showed that people taking Tequin® had 17 times greater risk of developing serious diabetes and 4 times greater risk of being hospitalized for low blood sugar complications than people taking other antibiotics for the same treatment. Due to the condition of the study, these numbers are probably lower than what they are in reality.
In May 2006, Bristol Myers announced that it would stop producing Tequin®.
