What is it?

Trasylol is the brand name of the drug aprotinin, and was launched by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp in December 1993. The drug is used in surgical procedures and administered as an injection that helps arrest heavy bleeding and the need for blood transfusions both during and after surgery. When injected into the human body Trasylol inhibits the action of enzymes which increase the risk of bleeding. The drug is typically used in heart bypass surgeries and sometimes hip replacement surgeries as well.

Research in recent years has unearthed a slew of negative findings, associated with the use of Trasylol. A series of side effects including kidney problems, heart attack, stroke, thrombosis, myocardial infarction and encephalopathy have been linked to the use of Trasylol.

Research findings on Trasylol

The New England Journal of Medicine published a study in 2006, which observed that the use of Trasylol may actually increase the chances of kidney failure, myocardial infarction, heart failure and stroke in patients. The study estimated that Trasylol use may double the risk of kidney failure, increase risks of heart attack / failure by 55% and the risk of stroke by 181%. Findings from the study also suggest that over 11,000 patients may have needed to depend on dialysis treatments following the use of Trasylol.

Additionally, a Canadian study established that aside from the risks associated with it, Trasylol was in no way more effective than competing medications, such as the generic Amicar, and Cyklokapron which are far less expensive.

In September 2006, following the reports on Trasylol, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) convened an Advisory Committee Meeting and issued a public health advisory which observed that Trasylol manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, was aware of the risks associated with the drug, and had failed to disclose the results from a study that it had conducted on 67,000 patients undergoing heart surgery. It is learnt that preliminary results from Bayer's study had linked the use of Trasylol with risks such as congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and death. Bayer Pharmaceuticals had not disclosed this information when it participated in the FDA Advisory Committee meeting.

In November 2007, the FDA ordered a marketing suspension of Trasylol, and Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp., the manufacturer, complied. The FDA stated that Bayer had been asked to remove its stock of Trasylol from across the U.S. market. Access to the drug was being permitted only for investigational use on certain patients who may have had no acceptable alternatives.

Following the FDA order, Bayer indicated that it would remove Trasylol supplies from across all countries where the drug remained in the supply chain. It however maintained that the drug would be available in certain markets where the local authorities approved its use in special access programs. While Bayer Pharmaceuticals announced that it would withdraw Trasylol from the market worldwide, it did not confirm the recall as being permanent.

Presently, researchers estimate that Trasylol may have claimed well over 22,000 lives.
