What is Zicam?
Zicam is a homeopathic cold remedy formulation, marketed by Matrixx Initiatives Inc., as an over the counter nasal spray medication. The drug includes active constituents such as galphimia glauca, histamine dihydrochloride, ICAM-1, luffa operculata, sulphur and zinc and was marketed as nasal gels, sprays and swabs for the treatment of allergy, sinus and common cold conditions. The drug is mainly effective in reducing the duration of common cold in affected individuals, and aids quicker decongestion of nasal passages.
Zicam provides effective relief from cold and sinus symptoms, mainly through compression of the blood vessels in the nasal passage, and reducing the swelling and tenderness of the sinus. It is important to note that the drug produces a constriction action not only on the blood vessels in the nasal passages, but on the entire set of blood vessels in the body.
Zicam Side Effects
Presently, varied side effects are being associated with the drug including Anosmia – a condition involving permanent loss of smell and taste, headache, nausea, diarrhea, hallucinations, seizures, allergies and occasionally loss of memory and taste as well. The packaging of Zicam clearly warns that the use of the drug be limited to twice a day and not exceed five consecutive days, however it does not share adequate warning information on the potential side effects from the product.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have now identified over 130 cases of individuals who have developed Anosmia following the use of Zicam. It has since prohibited the manufacturer Matrixx Initiatives, from selling certain Zicam products in the United States until further data is made available on the safety and effectiveness of the drug. The prohibited products include Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs (Kids Size). It has also mandated that the manufacturer establish the safety and effectiveness of the drug, along with observations through research and testing.
Further, the FDA has also warned the public to avoid the use of decongestants given their potentially adverse side-effects.
It is believed that Matrixx Initiatives may have been aware of the problems and side effects that could emerge following the use of their product, but failed to take the necessary steps to protect their consumers' safety and health.
Worryingly, it is now learnt that Zicam users run the risk of developing Anosmia even after a single use of the drug. Essentially, this could mean that the number of affected individuals could well be over the 130 reported cases, and that in reality, the drug has impacted over thousands of users who are potentially at risk of a permanent disability.
