Millions of American men have turned to medical science for treatment of male pattern baldness. One drug, Propecia, has been lauded as an effective way to regrow thinning hair on the crown of the patient’s head. The active ingredient, finasteride, interferes with the hormonal changes that cause hair loss. However, the reversal of baldness may come at a significant cost for some patients.
Men have reported the following devastating side effects after using Propecia:
- Sexual effects. The most commonly-suffered side effects were sexual problems; understandably, since finasteride changes the expression of male hormones. Patients have reported loss of sex drive, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, ejaculation disorders, and shrinking or painful genitals.
- Male infertility. Sexual side effects have made it difficult for some men to conceive children, as men may suffer ejaculation failure, retrograde ejaculation, and a decrease in semen volume.
- Psychological effects. Many men taking Propecia have reported mental fatigue and increased anxiety and depression as a result, both with and without the presence of other symptoms.
- Cancer. Propecia has also been linked to the development of male breast cancer and an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Men taking Propecia were also more likely to suffer later diagnosis of prostate cancer, making it more difficult to treat the condition.
Side Effects May Last Even After Patients Stop Using Propecia
Clinical trial data suggests that Propecia’s manufacturer, Merck & Co., was aware of the potential for side effects, with twice the rate of sexual side effects in men treated with Propecia than those given a placebo. In over 90 percent of men, sexual problems were reported to last for more than a year after patients stopped taking the drug—and in many cases lasted over three years after discontinuing use.
